Carney’s point wasn’t about Trump. Trump is merely the wake-up call, making quite clear a situation that has existed for 70 years. For a long time, niddle-sized countries could persuade themselves that sucking up to the bully would keep them OK. They can’t any more.
I disagree with Mearsheimer when he says that middle-sized countries are basically helpless. The USA’s economy is now only 25% of the world economy, there’s no reason why that should dominate the entire planet.
