This is a truly fascinating article, but on the other hand Davies does not mention the most important, and really only pertinent fact: with neo-liberalism we are experiencing one of the most rabid attacks of one class against another in recent history. This has nothing to do with trust, but with destruction of society and the environment as we know it. People do not not need to be told truths by an elite, they are living these truths. Gramsci analysed the class structures that makes this possible, whereas Davies flounders. There are obviously too many trees blocking Davies´ view of the forest.
