Our author Aleks Szcerbiak explained almost four weeks ago why the PIS party has been so successful here. The answer is simple: anti-austerity by redistributing wealth from the metropolitan professional elite and corporations to lower incomes. This, not civil rights (since when did the EU intervene for civil rights?), is anathema for the EU political elite.
