The egregious saga of the corruption scandals surrounding Romania’s Social Democracy Party continues. After 10 years of Romania being a member of the EU this seems not to disturb the European Union in the least. Tax evasion, corruption, cartels; all these appear to be integral parts of EU political and economic culture – democracy, justice, social inclusion, and equality on the other hand are not. In the meantime a wave of protests is taking place in Romania as the Social Democratic government has revised tax rules, which will make workers responsible for paying the share of social welfare taxes currently paid by employers. The taxes have until now been jointly paid by workers and their employers. The neoliberal EU project marches inexorably on.
