Substitute Brexit and Remain and you have the same story. We let ourselves for emotional reasons and political laziness accept binary decisions. The world is not black and white or Manichean as the intellectuals call it. It was Marx who introduced the dialectic into progressive politics. It is one of our most important tools. Maybe it is time to bring it down from the attic, dust it off, and oil it. It quite often comes in handy. The UK University Strikers and striking students are using it very effectively. The conflict is not really about staff pensions. It is about the commodisation of education. They are fighting for our children and children’s children and generations to come. Let us support them in their struggle – in our struggle.
