George Monbiot presents some very interesting thoughts about treaties. When one speaks with Italians about their current conflict with the EU – actually Germany as hegemon – they explain that they present economic arguments why Italy needs financial leeway to save its economy and democracy, the Germans simply reply: “But there are the rules and treaties”. The previous German Finance Minister Who-Must-Not-Be-Named made this clear when he declared regarding Greece: “New Elections change nothing”.
