Robert de Vries and Aaron Reeves: Why do people care more about benefit ‘scroungers’ than billions lost to the rich?

The authors identify a phenomenon that we saw in the election of Donald Trump as president of the USA: People identify with the rich and powerful – to which they will never belong – rather than with those with the same class interests. Add to this that citizens no longer see government as something that serves them, but the bank accounts of the political class and their friends. In the case of the UK, they are not all that far off the mark.
