Italy: As Europe descends into the madness of weapons and war, we need critical voices now more than ever

This is a translation of an Italian appeal  in English, which together with some Italian and foreign intellectuals and activists has been drafted against European rearmament and in view of the big demonstration on 5 April, Saturday, at 1pm at the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II in Rome.

1. Russia is not a danger to Europe.
There is no reasonable document or statement or analysis that gives the slightest foundation to the contrary thesis. Even if one ignores the failure to respect the agreements for the non-enlargement of NATO and for the neutrality of Ukraine, and attributes the responsibility for the war entirely to Russia, the fact remains that Russia’s interest is to have good relations with Europe, which represents a large market for it, certainly not to make it its enemy. The same should be true for Europe, of which Russia is a part.
2. The European governments, who together with the major media have followed Biden’s USA and have acted against the interests of their peoples, are persevering in their horrible policy even after the new US administration seems to have abandoned the neocon plan. They want to commit hundreds of billions to arm the continent, Germany first, against an enemy that they themselves invented, also with the political aim of giving themselves new legitimacy.
But the real motivations seem to be different: to support the arms industry; to create a justification for cutting social spending, starting with healthcare and education; to throw open the doors, which have already opened, to the total privatization of the welfare state. European governments, and the media that support them, act in the interests of large financial groups that already control a large part of the economy, information and politics in the entire West.
3. The idea that in the face of a danger, in this case even non-existent, one should respond, in the atomic age, by investing in weapons, if there were not substantial economic interests and domination behind it, would only be a sign of mental imbalance. Even a war that began as a conventional one, would inevitably degenerate into a nuclear war when one of the parties was about to lose. In the apocalypse that would follow, the one with unassailable vectors would still have the upper hand, that is, Russia. To demonstrate, if there was any need, that the true objective of European governments, and those who support them, is only to transform welfare into warfare and to support the ongoing process of centralization of wealth to the detriment of the populations.
4. In the nuclear age there is no humanly acceptable alternative other than peace through diplomacy. This is what governments should dedicate themselves to. And all available resources should serve only to increase social justice and the well-being of people, already hit hard by thirty years of unbridled liberalism.
These are the two real discriminating points with which we must judge those who claim to govern.
The new rearmament, on the other hand, want us at war.
